In various Islamic sciences, we see the use of the concept of Tawil (allegorical interpretation). In some Islamic denominations, including the Ismailis, this term is so widely used that it has become a fundamental doctrine. Ismailis consider Tawil to be the authority of the Imams, as opposed to Tanzil, which is the authority of the prophets. This type of interpretation is known as "inner interpretation" which reveals the inner meaning of words. It is different from "Quranic interpretation" which means referring to the truth on which a word or an apparent matter relies, and also from "theological interpretation", which means preferring the less acceptable meaning over the apparent meaning (based on a verbal or intellectual reason). What we are looking for in this article is to compare these three interpretations in terms of quantification and regulation. By focusing more on the allegorical interpretations of the Ismailis, we show that this type of understanding of the apparent meanings of religious texts and teachings is not based on any critical or even comprehensible logic. Therefore their acceptance is possible only by relying on faith and obedience. We believe that Shiite hadith, mystical and philosophical heritage, which naturally should be treated in the same way, is not free of this kind of interpretation.
